Some of the children were as young as ten years old.  Another factory in India that makes GAP product, was responsible for the death of three employees because they were not allowed to leave work when sick.  GAP has sweatshops in at least six other countries.

Where are the worst sweatshops found?

Bangladesh Sweatshop

Bangladesh has the world’s worst sweatshop conditions. JMS garments factory is located in Chittagong, Bangladesh. This factory makes school uniforms for Wal-Mart that is branded “Faded Glory”. In fact 15% of Wal-Mart’s eleven billion dollar garment business is made in Bangladesh.  About ninety employees complained in their interviews about their working conditions.  They said they sometimes worked nineteen hour shifts and were only paid about twenty dollars a month.  In addition, they were verbally and physically abused for even a simple reason of being a little late to work.

Sweat Shop Free Manufacturing

Do all factories have to be Sweatshops?

Not all factories have to be sweatshops. In fact, DovCharney, the CEO of American Apparel, wanted to be make sure that his factory never became a sweatshop.  AmericanApparel employs
twelve thousand workers worldwide.  Most of the employees are found working here in Los Angeles, California. American Apparel and all of their employees pay their share of taxes. American Apparel has the highest paid garment workers in the world. Their workers are paid by the pieces that they produce; and some of their employees earn up to $21.00/hour, making their yearly income around $40,000.  American Apparel hires workers that do not have prior experience, therefor they have on site job training. Not only do they provide job training, they give their employees health care benefits, massages, and they heavily promote the importance of exercise by their bicycle program.  For the production of products that are not made in their LA factory, such as hats and dance shoes, they only use American manufactures that are sweat shop free. The company has also been active in the process of immigration reform. They  are a publicly traded company that includes all of their employees to become shareholders of American Apparel. The company dream is to provide the “American Dream" to their employees.

There is more to Nike's Soles

Is Nike helpless or is Nike responsible

Nike sweatshop in Taiwan
Nike one of the worlds top athletic apparel manufactures is connected with sweatshops labor in both Taiwan and Indonesia. 10 years ago, Nike made a pledge to stop the use of sweatshops to manufactures their products. This article reveals that 10,000 female workers at a Taiwan factory for Nike were paid 50c an hour.  This pay can only cover a person’s food and shelter. In Jakarta, Indonesia the Nike Converse contractors abuse their workers. The employees are slapped in the face, called names such as “dogs and “pigs” and have shoes thrown at them. I do not believe that the conditions at the Nike sweatshop are right. I am surprised that this kind of abuse and slavery still exist today. “How can this be “?
